Ever tried to memorize two different sales presentations at the same time? As an insurance agent, I did—and it nearly scrambled my mindset! I had two coaches, each convinced their script was the best. I’d practice one script in front of the other coach and get feedback like, “Hmm, that line could be stronger.” Switch to the other script, and it still wasn’t quite right. Soon I was switching between scripts so much that words started to blend together like a bad remix. One script said “underwriter” and while practicing I accidentally said I was an “undertaker!” I had a good laugh over that one. Glad I never said that to a client!
Mindset Heart Check Through Prayer
One morning during my devotional time, I prayed a bold prayer for my outlook and heart: “Lord, search me. If there’s anything in me that’s not right, show me, forgive me, and help me change.” Be careful what you ask for—God answered! He revealed four perspective issues I needed to address.
- People‐Pleasing vs. God‐Pleasing Mindset
I discovered I was trying to please both coaches instead of focusing on a God-pleasing approach. Scripture reminds us to work “as for the Lord and not for men”. When our motivation is to honor God first, it frees us from the exhausting trap of seeking approval from everyone else. As Herbert Bayard Swope once said, he couldn’t give a surefire formula for success, but he could give one for failure: “Try to please everybody all the time” Guilty as charged!
- Confusion from a Double-Minded Mindset
Even though both coaches said I could use either script, my wavering thinking kept doubting which was right. James warns that if we ask God for wisdom, we should ask in faith because a person who doubts is like a wave tossed by the wind—a “doubleminded” person is unstable in all their ways. My indecision wasn’t helping anyone; it only produced stress and confusion.
- Serving With a God-Honoring Mindset
In my frustration over scripts and perfection, I forgot why I do this work—to serve clients, steward my gifts, and bring God glory. Paul tells us that whatever we do, we should do it all for God’s glory. Peter adds that each of us has received a gift and should use it to serve others as faithful stewards of God’s grace. My coach’s advice— “Give yourself grace! Babies don’t come out of the womb walking and talking”—helped me remember growth takes time. Choosing a God-centered perspective realigned my focus.
- Fear of Failure vs. Growth Mindset
I realized I had created a fear-based outlook. I didn’t want to fail, so I hesitated to pick up the phone. But failure is often just a steppingstone. Thomas Edison famously said he hadn’t failed, he’d simply found 10,000 ways that didn’t work. Every call—even the awkward ones—is an opportunity to learn and serve better. As my coach reminds us, “You can never say the wrong thing to the right person, and you can never say the right thing to the wrong person.” Your job is to show up, serve your clients at the highest level, and let God handle the results.
Why Mindset Matters
Mindset isn’t just about sales scripts—it’s about how you approach money, relationships, and even your walk with God.
- A self-doubt attitude says, “I can’t do this. What makes me think I can do this?” A biblical mindset says, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13).
- A fearful outlook says, “What if I fail?” A faith mindset says, “God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7).
- A comparison perspective says, “I’ll never be as good as them.” A Kingdom mindset says, “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14) and “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11).
The truth? Mindset shapes your reality. Change your mindset, and you change your direction in whatever you do.
Balancing scripts and advice can be tricky, but the lesson is clear: focus on pleasing God, not people. Don’t let confusion and perfectionism rob you of joy in serving others. And don’t be paralyzed by the fear of failure—embrace each experience as growth.
When you develop an approach that honors God, serves people, and embraces growth, you’ll not only succeed in business—you’ll thrive in life.
